Tallinn Christmas Market 2024
The Tallinn Christmas Market (that has been running since 1991) finally returns to Town Hall Square, filling the heart of the Old Town with festive cheer from November 22 to December 27, 2024. The market will be opened every day from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
In 2019, the Tallinn Christmas Market was named the Best Christmas Market in Europe and is still considered one of Europe's best Christmas markets to visit in 2024.
Grand Opening on November 22
This year’s Christmas Market kicks off with an official opening on November 22, with an opening speech and light up Tallinn's most cherished Christmas tree. Covered in thousands of glowing ornaments, this tree will cast a warm glow over the festive stalls, inviting locals and tourists to enjoy the magic of the season.
Fun fact: Estonia’s biggest Christmas tree has been set up in front of the town hall each year since 1441, making it one of the very first to be displayed anywhere in Europe.
Handcrafted and Cozy Gifts
As you stroll through the market, you'll find many stalls. Local artisans will be offering handcrafted gifts like woolen mittens, scarves, and hats in both traditional and modern styles—perfect for keeping us all warm during Estonian winter!
Estonian Traditional Food and Flavours
A Christmas market wouldn't be complete without holiday treats, right?
Visitors can treat themselves with hot and chill (new!) mulled wine (glögg), with varieties from classic to creative, including local favorites like sea buckthorn and blueberry. And of course, the savory scents of traditional Estonian Christmas dishes—blood sausages, sauerkraut, and potatoes—waft through the square. Vegetarians, too, will find a range of plant-based holiday options!
For those with a sweet tooth, the market’s Gingerbread World offers beautifully decorated cookies that are almost too pretty to eat. These gingerbread treats are perfect as gifts or for adding a touch of Christmas charm to your home.
A Sustainable Christmas
The Tallinn Christmas Market is committed to sustainability. All food and drinks are served in reusable dishes, with a small deposit to encourage eco-friendly choices. This simple but effective system reduces waste and allows everyone to enjoy the market’s delights while being kind to the environment!
Advent Celebrations and Christmas Performances
The holiday season officially begins on December 1st, the First Advent, with a special candle-lighting ceremony. The Advent season kicks off with a choir performance featuring beloved carols and hymns sung by local church choirs, filling the square with festive music.
Christmas Eve: The Proclamation of Christmas Peace
In a cherished tradition, on Christmas Eve, December 24th, at 11:50, Tallinn Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski will proclaim the Christmas Peace, a tradition dating back centuries and inspired by Queen Christina of Sweden.
The Tallinn Christmas Market will close on December 27.
Don’t miss this chance to experience the magic, charm, and warmth of Tallinn’s Christmas Market, with your loved ones!
