Influential Women that Shaped Estonia

Lydia Koidula (1843-1886): Often referred to as the “Mother of Estonian Theater,” Lydia Koidula was a prominent poet and playwright during the Estonian national awakening in the 19th century. Her works played a crucial role in fostering a sense of national identity.

Marie Under (1883-1980): A leading Estonian poet, Marie Under was a prominent figure in Estonian literature during the early 20th century. Her poetry explored themes of love, nature, and human existence.

Aino Kallas (1878-1956): A Finnish-Estonian author, Aino Kallas wrote novels and short stories that explored psychological and philosophical themes. Her work contributed to the cultural and literary development of Estonia.

Kersti Kaljulaid (born 1969): Estonia’s first female (and youngest!) president, Kaljulaid has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to digital innovation. She advocates for a modern and inclusive Estonia on the global stage.

Carmen Kass (born 1978): An Estonian fashion model and former political candidate. She has worked as the face of brands such as Chanel, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Valentino, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, Givenchy, and, for ten consecutive years, Michael Kors!

Kristina Šmigun-Vähi (born 1977): A former Estonian female cross-country skier and politician. She is the most successful Estonian female cross-country skier with two Olympic gold medals. In 2019 she was elected as a Member of the Estonian Parliament.

Kaja Kallas (born 1977): Estonia’s first female prime minister, Kallas assumed office in 2021, demonstrating leadership and breaking gender barriers in Estonian politics.

Tiiu Kuik (born 1987): Another successful Estonian model, Tiiu Kuik has gained recognition internationally for her work with top fashion brands, showcasing Estonia’s talent in the fashion industry.

Anu Tali (born 1972): A renowned conductor and the founder of the Nordic Symphony Orchestra, Anu Tali has made significant contributions to Estonia’s cultural scene, promoting classical music both nationally and globally.

Heljo Mänd (1926-2020): She was an Estonian children's writer, novelist, newspaper editor and poet.

Ene Ergma (born 1944): Ene Ergma is an astrophysicist and politician who served as the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament. Her work in astrophysics has earned her international acclaim.

Liina Kersna (born 1977): Liina Kersna is an Estonian politician and educator. As the Minister of Education and Research, she has been involved in shaping Estonia’s education policies.

Helena Tulve (born 1972): Helena Tulve is a contemporary composer known for her innovative compositions, bridging traditional and modern musical elements. Her work has been performed internationally.
