How to Get Through a Cold Wave in Tallinn

Well, it looks like we're in for a frosty ride with temperatures plummeting to a nice -18 degrees Celsius next week in Tallinn!

So, how do you survive and even enjoy the bone-chilling beauty of Tallinn during a cold wave? Here are some tested tips to help you embrace the freeze.

1. Become an Onion

Let's talk about the art of layering. Forget what you know about fashion; this is survival.

Start with some thermal undershirts, wear as many pairs of pants as you can, and top it all off with a windproof long coat. Don't leave your extremities out in the cold—gloves, hats, and scarves are your winter armour.

We all look like potatoes, so nobody will judge you. Also, long coats can be extremely fashionable too!

My advise is not to exaggerate too much, because if you enter a mall or a bus, the temperature is drastically different, and you risk not feeling very well. The perfect balance in my opinion is: thermal tights, or regular ones, and a pair of heavy pants. Yes, also for men. And on top, a shirt, a hoodie, and a good jacket!

2. Invest in Quality Winter Clothing

A warm winter coat, insulated boots, and thermal socks are investments that pay off during severe cold spells. Believe me.

High-quality winter gear not only keeps you warm but also provides protection against wind, rain, and snow, ensuring a more comfortable experience outdoors.

I know they can be expensive items, but luckily there are many options to consider if you’re on a budget: outlets and second-hand shops, such as Humana, Uuskasutuskeskus and Khuul Thrift Store, all provide good quality items for a really great price!

3. Enjoy some Warmth - you deserve it!

When it’s too cold out there, it's wise to limit outdoor exposure and enjoy some indoor warmth. Plan indoor activities, explore local museums, cafes, and entertainment venues to stay warm. Seek refuge in Tallinn's cosy cafes, museums, and join local events. Tallinn offers many indoor activities during the winter, so stay assured you’ll always find something to do.

4. Turn Your Home into a Safe Space

What the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over, right?

Your home should be your safe space, and making it comfortable might make you forget how cold it is out there. Close the windows, crank up the heat, and wrap yourself in snuggly blankets. Sip on some warm tea/coffee and wear the warmest socks you have.

There you go - your small personal tropical island!

5. Stay Hydrated

Don’t let the weather fool you: it’s not needed to stay hydrated in summer only

Winter's chill is notorious for sucking the moisture out of everything, including you. If you do not fancy water that much during winter, consider warm beverages or even soups to ingest some liquids. Hydration and nourishment should be not just a routine but a strategy for supporting your body in conquering the cold.

6. Become Cold Resistant

Becoming cold-resistant involves more than just enduring low temperatures; it's about training your body to adapt and thrive in chilly environments.

Cold plunges and cold showers initiate a series of physiological responses that contribute to enhanced resilience.
Exposure to cold stimulates the activation of brown fat, a type of fat that generates heat by burning calories. This process, known as thermogenesis, not only boosts metabolism but also increases the body's tolerance to cold.

The repeated practice of controlled cold environments prompts the body to improve its thermoregulatory mechanisms, making you more cold resistant.

You can take a cold plunge in many places in Tallinn, some examples:

Elamus spa, Iglu park, Lennusulps...

7. Knowledge is Power

Stay tuned to weather updates, warnings, and let the forecast guide your plans. Knowledge is your ally in navigating the ever-changing winter landscape, especially here in Tallinn. Let’s be prepared for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw on us!
